Dental Assisting Level II Upgrade

This certificate continuing education program is designed for Level I Dental Assistants who wish to upgrade their skills to meet the requirements of a Level II Dental Assistant. Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be eligible to challenge the NDAEB exam and apply for Level II Certification with the Ontario Dental Assistants Association.

Students will circulate through a module program consisting of an Online Theory Component, as well as on site Practical Component. The online theory component must be completed before the student enters the hands-on practical component. Once students complete all modules, they will enter the Patient Care module where they will apply their skills on patients.  

Prerequisite(s):

  • Be a graduate of a recognized Level I Dental Assisting program (official transcript required)
  • Medical/Immunization Form completed 
  • CPR Level C (current certificate required) 
  • Proof of HARP*
  • ODAA Membership recommended

*Students who do not currently have HARP will be required to complete a program recognized by HARP for Radiology. 

Note: International students (educated outside of Canada) will be required to complete the Clinical Practical Examination (CPE) through the NDAEB. Regulated provinces require non-accredited program graduates to complete the Clinical Practice Evaluation prior to considering them for licensure or registration. 

Career Opportunities  

Level II dental assistants have great opportunities in the dental field.  They work with health care professionals and related agencies in any or all of the following capacities: chairside assistant, intra-oral assistant, administrative assistant, community health assistant, treatment coordinator, dental sales and insurance, sterilization assistant, dental education and research assistant. Overall, Level II Dental Assistants will enjoy more benefits as compared to Level I dental assistants due to advanced training.

Schedule

Week 1
  • Online Component: 5 hours (Pre-requisite: None)
  • Practical Component: 4 hours (Pre-requisite: Module 1 Online Theory)

Infection Control
It is the responsibility of the Dental Profession to provide the most effective, comfortable and safe environment for patients who place their trust in a practice for dental care. This course will update Dental Assistants in Infection Prevention and Control in order to attend clinical courses at Medix College.

Week 2
  • Online Component: 10 hours (Pre-requisite: Infection Control Theory)
  • Practical Component: 36 hours  (Pre-requisite: Module 1; Module 2 Online Theory)

Rubber Dam

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Application and Removal of Dental Dam.” Building on foundation and information presented in Level I courses, students will be able to correctly assess the area of the mouth which requires isolation for patient treatment. They will also decide on the most appropriate clamp, as well as place and remove the dental dam with minimum trauma and maximum safety to the patient. Students will demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills to provide the appropriate post-operative instructions for the treatment procedure.

Apply and Remove Matrices and Wedges

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Application and Removal Matrices and Wedges.” Building on foundation and information presented in Level I courses, students will be able to correctly assess the prepared tooth, decide on the most appropriate matrix system, and place the band and wedge with minimum trauma as well as maximum safety to the patient. Medix Online will offer clinical training where techniques will be practiced and evaluated using dental manikins/dentoforms. Assessment will involve anterior and posterior application of appropriate matrix bands and wedges for selected teeth. Students will demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills to provide the appropriate post-operative instructions for the treatment procedure.

Apply Treatment Liners, No Pupal Involvement

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Apply Treatment Liners (no pupal involvement).” This is a Level II module that incorporates the knowledge of dental materials taught in Level I. The course also introduces students to the independent skill of applying a dental liner to a prepared tooth according to the dentist prescription. Students will be able to assess the anatomy of the tooth and cavity preparation. They will also manipulate and apply the material to the surfaces required in order to achieve maximum protection for the dental pulp. Skills will be practiced in a clinical setting with dental manikins, where they will develop the competency and efficiency required as entry-level Dental Assisting graduates. Students will demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills to provide the appropriate post-operative instructions for the treatment procedure.

Apply Topical Anaesthetics

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Apply Topical Anesthetics.” In preparation for the dentist to administer local anesthetic for a dental procedure, the tissue at the injection site requires desensitization with a topical product to make the patient more comfortable. Building on foundation and information presented in Level I courses, this course will provide students with a review of the anatomical structures of the oral cavity. The review will help students understand the location of the injection site where topical anesthetic will be applied. Students will also develop the clinical dexterity to apply topical anesthetic to the tissue in the area where the dentist will place the anesthetic solution. Students will provide patient orientation and post-operative instructions, and apply the topical anesthetic in a safe and comfortable manner.

Week 3
  • Online Component: 12 hours (Pre-requisite: Infection Control Theory)
  • Practical Component: 8 hours (Pre-requisite: Module 1; Module 3 Online Theory)

Provide Oral Hygiene Instruction

The Oral Hygiene Instruction module is a Level II Intra-Oral course that will be applied as an addition to Coronal Polish and Application of Anticariogenic Agents–in efforts to provide complete preventive services for the patient. Students will assess the oral condition of the dental patient and decide upon the most appropriate education plan based on patient needs and dexterity. Students will also present the plan for treatment to the supervising faculty member. The faculty member will approve its delivery to the patient during the coronal polish appointment. Students will demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills to provide the appropriate post-operative instructions for the treatment procedure.

Provide Dietary Counseling

The Dietary Counseling module is a Level II Intra-Oral course that will be applied as an addition to Coronal Polish and Application of Anticariogenic Agents–in efforts to provide complete preventive services for the patient. Students will assess the oral condition of the dental patient and decide upon the most appropriate education plan based on patient needs. Students will present the plan for treatment to the supervising faculty member–who will approve its delivery to the patient during the coronal polish appointment. Students will also demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills to provide the appropriate post-operative instructions for the treatment procedure.

Week 4
  • Online Component: 30 hours (Pre-requisite: Infection Control Theory)
  • Practical Component: 32 hours (Pre-requisite: Module 1; Module 4 Online Theory)

Provide Selective Coronal Polish

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Selective Coronal Polish.” Students will be able to assess and interpret oral conditions present in the oral cavity. They will then make a decision regarding the most appropriate treatment procedure to bring that patient to optimum dental health.

Apply Desensitizing Agents

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Apply Desensitizing Agents.” Information and clinical application will introduce the student to the application of desensitizing agents to hypersensitive tooth surfaces. They will also learn how to select the most appropriate material and apply it in a safe and comfortable manner. Students will be presented with factors thought to be responsible for tooth sensitivity and the treatment options available for resolution of the problem. Students will also prepare the materials required, provide patient orientation, demonstrate communication skills and give post-operative instructions.

Apply Anti-Carcinogenic Agents

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Application of Anticariogenic Agents.” Building on foundation and information presented in Level I courses, this module will focus on maximum cavity prevention to the patient when receiving a fluoride application. This also is followed with coronal polishing and the benefits of fluoride to the population. This Level II, Intra-Oral course is a component of complete preventive services that are provided for the dental patient in private practice. Students will be able to continue with patient assessment techniques and treatment planning–regarding the most appropriate dental fluoride treatment for the patient. The course will prepare students with the clinical dexterity to: apply topical fluoride in the oral cavity after the patient has received a selective coronal polish. Students will demonstrate patient preparation and communication skills. They will also prepare the materials required, provide patient orientation and post-operative instructions, and deliver the material in a safe and comfortable manner.

Apply Pit and Fissure Sealants

This course will prepare Dental Assisting students for the Intra-Oral Skill, “Apply Pit and Fissure Sealants.” Building on foundation and information presented in Level I courses, the course will prepare students to provide preventive dental services for patients. With supervision of a dental faculty member, students will learn that a tooth teeth be sealed against bacterial activity using enamel sealants. They will also be able to provide patient assessment techniques and treatment planning regarding the most appropriate sealant product for the patient. The course will prepare students with the clinical dexterity to apply the prescribed sealant to the tooth/teeth in the oral cavity. Students will also prepare the materials required, provide patient orientation and post-operative instructions, select the most appropriate material and apply it in a safe and comfortable manner.
