Learning Objective:

By the end of this course, students should understand the following:

  • Understanding of the functions and proper use of transcription equipment
  • Describe the importance of the confidential nature of medical reports
  • Be aware of HIPPA guidelines for the medical transcriptionist
  • Describe the content and purpose of the types of inpatient medical reports
  • Describe the content and purpose of the types of outpatient medical reports and correspondence
  • Understanding of abbreviations that should not be used in transcription, hospitals or medical settings
  • Spell both the English and medical terms correctly, as well as the abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/medical book
  • Define the medical terms and abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/reference book
  • Define the prefixes, combining forms and suffixes presented 
  • Recognize the advantages of having current reference material and be able to use it effectively
  • Use standard proofreader’s marks to edit medical reports without changing either the meaning or the dictator’s style
  • Recognize the opportunities offered to medical transcriptionists
